In 1946, the Hellenic Olympic Committee, on the 50th anniversary of the revival of the first Olympic Games in 1896, began to celebrate the anniversary of the start of the Games on April 6, having even proposed to the International Olympic Committee that this date be made public celebration.

The International Olympic Committee, however, decided to designate June 23, the day of its founding in 1894 and the assignment of the Olympic Games in Athens, as "Olympic Day".
