Greek Hospital of Agios Charalambos, Smyrna 1896

Letters from the hospital's ephorate to Christos Tsirigotis, Doctor, Director of Dromokaiteion.In the first one they ask for two nurses to be sent to 'Saint Charalambos' and in the second they send their thanks.

Rare seals on both documents 

The Greek Hospital was founded in 1723 by donations from individuals and guilds and had joint trustees with the church of Agia Fotini. The purchase of the plot of land in the “Neo Mahala”, where the hospital was built, was made with large donations from believers and from the income of the church. In 1745, a brotherhood was established by 12 Smyrnaeans, headed by the Metropolitan of Smyrna, with the aim of collecting donations for the Hospital, which in 1748 was named the “Greek Hospital”.

In 1797, the hospital was destroyed in the so-called “Smyrna rebellion” and was rebuilt in 1804 with new donations. At the beginning of the 19th century, the name "Saint Charalambos" was added to the hospital's name, to whom the faithful invoked to combat the plague
