Nicholas was the fourth child and third son of George I of Greece and Olga Konstantinovna of Russia. He was born in Athens on 22 January 1872. Like all princes (and princesses) of Greece, he held the title of Prince of Greece and Denmark. He was known as "the Greek Nicky" among his family, in distinction from his cousin, Nicholas II of Russia.
