Michael Korakas (1797-1882) was born in Pobia, Messara, as Michalis Karouzos. At the age of 18 he killed Aga Alikos and then fought in the Cretan Revolution of 1821.

In 1827, with a pirate ship and base at Karpathos, he fought the Ottoman and Egyptian fleet. In 1828, he continued the fight in the Peloponnese and was awarded the rank of captain and the bronze cross of the Phoenix. He returned with honors to Crete in 1834 and took part in the Cretan Revolution of 1841, the Cretan Revolution of 1858 and the Cretan Revolution of 1866, fighting against numerous Ottoman forces. He preached the revolution of 1878 and was later honored by King George in Athens and the Patriarch of Alexandria.
