Spyros Kagiales 1897 Akrotiri, Commemorative Medal
Spyros Kagiales (1872-1929) was a great Cretan fighter. His historically significant brave act at Akrotiri, on February 9, 1897, played an important role in the independence of Crete a few months later. When a shell shattered the flagpole of the Greek flag, he grabbed it, using his own body as a flagpole. In this way, he won the admiration of the fleet of the Great Powers that had been called in to suppress the revolution.
