Proceedings of the Archaeological Society of Athens from June 1873 to June 1874
Dipylon: In the center of the plan is the 'Double Gate' with the inner trap yard. If someone breached the outer entrance, they were trapped in a narrow rectangular yard, exposed to the arrows of the Athenian archers who were on the walls.
From here began the Panathenaic Road that led to the Acropolis and to Plato's Academy
The Pompeion, as seen in the plan, was the building where the preparation for the Panathenaic Games took place
It was originally called the Thriasian Gates because it led to the Thriasian Field and Eleusis. The name Dipylon prevailed in the 3rd century BC due to its architectural form
The excavations in the Kerameikos and the discovery of Dipylon took place in the decade of 1870
