The Air Force Cross of Valour was originally established in 1945 as the highest Moral Award for flying Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers for acts of exceptional bravery or self-sacrifice in flight during combat air operations. In 1953, with an amendment to the decree, it was awarded only posthumously to airmen killed in air operations during 1946-1949.

The medal is accompanied by its award (unwritten) with authentic ribbon.
